Arsenal earned a superb 3-0 victory away from home against Eintracht Frankfurt to get their Europa League campaign off to a winning start.

Joe Willock opened the scoring with a deflected strike while Emiliano Martinez made a number of decent stops to deny the home side in an even contest.

But the Gunners capitalised on Dominik Kohr’s red card with two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to secure the points.

Arsenal player ratings vs Eintracht Frankfurt – Europa League

GK: Emiliano Martinez – 9

A brilliant display from the Arsenal No 2, making excellent saves from Djibril Sow, Filip Kostic and Andre Silva to keep his side in the game.

Commanded his area fantastically and even started the move for the second goal with a smart roll to Granit Xhaka.

Won’t get the headlines, but this was an almost-perfect performance.

RB: Calum Chambers – 5

Given a thorough workout by Kostic and struggled to keep the winger contained, but made a great block from Martin Hinteregger and battled gamely.

CB: Shkodran Mustafi – 6

A clean sheet and a relatively untroubled display from Mustafi was very welcome, considering his recent performances for the Gunners.

Helped hold together a creaking back four, although Arsenal did allow over 20 shots on goal so room for improvement.

CB: David Luiz – 7

Used his physical presence well to snuff out danger and showed a cool head in some tricky situations, in stark contrast to his display against Watford.

LB: Sead Kolasinac – 5

Defensive positioning was an issue once again but both sides seemed keen to play fast and loose so the Bosnian’s willing running was welcome.

Had a shocking few moments when he tripped over the ball and was booked for time wasting then almost talked his way into trouble again before he was substituted.

CM: Lucas Torreira – 7

An all-action display from the Uruguayan, who looked keen to make an impression on a rare start.

Bustled around the pitch with great intent, throwing himself into tackles while also providing a threat offensively.

CM: Granit Xhaka – 7

Played a part in two of the goals, carrying the ball well in the closing stages of Saka’s strike and performed admirably in a position not entirely suited to his talents.

RAM: Emile Smith Rowe – 6

Not as eye-catching as his fellow academy graduates, although this was a useful run-out after a disjointed campaign in 2018/19.

Looked a bit lightweight but there were plenty of encouraging signs.

CAM: Joe Willock – 7

A dynamic display full of energy and invention, with his dribbling ability causing problems for the home defence.

Got a bit lucky with his goal but deserved more when some great skill played Aubameyang in, only for the chance to go begging.

LAM: Bukayo Saka – 9

The star man and will rightly earn all the headlines, taking on defenders with skill and pace before curling in a brilliant finish to cap an excellent outing.

ST: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6

Worked hard for little reward, although he will be pleased with a clinical finish in the closing moments.
