Boris Johnson says UK is doing ‘everything we can’ to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from Iran

BORIS Johnson pledged yesterday that the UK was doing “everything we can” to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from Iran — as a £400million ransom was ruled out.

Iranian officials have said Nazanin, 42, would be let out of jail if Britain agreed to repay the sum owed from an aborted 1979 arms deal.

But UK ministers insist that the British-Iranian mum’s jail ordeal on “trumped up” charges is not linked to the dispute.

PM Mr Johnson said they were “two entirely separate issues”.

He added: “We of course make sure that we do everything we can to look after the interests of Nazanin and all the very difficult dual national cases we have in Tehran.”

Nazanin, from North London, was detained in Tehran in 2016 while taking daughter Gabriella, now six, to see her family.

She strongly denies charges of spying.

She completed a five-year sentence in March but was hit with another year last week for anti-Iranian “propaganda”.

Foreign Office minister James Cleverly said ongoing legal negotiations between Tehran and London should be kept separate from the “arbitrary detention” of prisoners there.

He said: “We have always said that British dual nationals should not be used as political leverage.

“The Iranian regime have used disinformation – we’re hearing inaccurate reports.

“It is in the hands of the Tehran regime to release these people and they should be released.”
