Brexit LIVE: Farage warns EU 'bullies' have blockaded border to force UK to sign bad deal

3 mins read

Mr Farage took to Twitter this morning to accuse the EU of being “thugs and bullies who want to make us sign a bad deal.” It comes as talks on a post-Brexit trade deal look set to continue into next week after another weekend of tense negotiations failed to achieve a breakthrough.

Mr Farage, added: “Time to walk away, to hell with the EU.”

The EU Parliament had said the talks needed to be concluded by Sunday evening if it was to ratify any deal before the current Brexit transition ends on December 31st.

However, UK sources said “significant differences” remained over the key issues of fisheries and the so-called “level playing field rules” on state aid for business.

As a result, talks are expected to continue today with UK officials still hoping a deal is possible but acknowledged no deal was the most likely outcome.

One close to the talks told the EU had been behaving like “bull in a china shop” when it came to fisheries, adding: “It seems the Bloc aren’t thinking straight, they are not respecting UK sovereignty and want the majority of stocks for themselves.”

Another source added: “Talks remain difficult and significant differences remain.

“We continue to explore every route to a deal that is in line with the fundamental principles we brought into the negotiations.”

8am update: Grant Shapps says UK ‘ready’ for end of the transition period

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky this morning: “I’m in touch with my opposite number in France and we’re doing everything we can to get that restarted, in fact they’ve said to us they want to restart the hauliers as quickly as possible.

Mr Shapps said getting the bans lifted as swiftly as possible was his priority but that given British preparations for the end of the Brexit transition period, the country was prepared.
