The new tiered approach will have to come to a vote in the Commons, in which MPs will have their chance to have their say via the ballot.

Mr Johnson has come under fire from a number of his own backbench MPs for the new, more stringent system.

Deputy Chairman of the Covid Recovery Group, Steve Baker said the “authoritarianism at work today is truly appalling”, while senior MP Sir Graham Brady said he would be voting against the measures.

Mr Baker said: “The Government must publish its analysis of the impact interventions are likely to have on controlling Covid, as well as the non-Covid health impact and the impact on society, people’s livelihoods and businesses.”
