Iker Casillas risks wrath of Cristiano Ronaldo with Lionel Messi Ballon d'Or judgement

Iker Casillas doesn’t think it would be ‘logical’ for his former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or in 2019.

Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk are also in the running to take home the biggest individual prize in football, and Casillas has made his thoughts clear.

He wrote on Twitter: “Van Dijk was the best player in UEFA. Messi was the best for FIFA. Imagine Cristiano winning the Golden Ball.

“It seems to me that the criteria we follow in football to give prizes are not very logical, right? Friday’s reflection.”

Casillas has hit out at the projects of the three major football awards going to three different players in the same calendar year, and questioned how the conclusions are made.

Ronaldo only managed 28 goals in 43 appearances in his first season at Juventus, but did take home a Serie A winners’ medal.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is favourite to win the award for the first time after helping the Reds to a Champions League triumph last time out.

Messi is also in the running after securing another La Liga title with Barcelona, but could miss out after failing to lead his side to European glory.

Ronaldo’s mother Dolores Aveiro recently attacked football’s governing bodies about the amount of awards her son has won, despite the five Ballon d’Or trophies he won between 2008 and 2017.

She told the Portuguese press earlier this month: .”There is a mafia. That’s the right word to define it.

“Yes, there is a mafia in football.

“If there wasn’t a football mafia, my son would have more [individual] international trophies.

“If you see everything that happened, you will realise that it is the mafia.

“If he was Spanish or English they would not do what they did to him.

“But since he’s Portuguese and from Madeira… well, this happens.”
