Nick Kyrgios fires Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal warning shot ahead of Laver Cup

The 2019 Laver Cup gets underway later today with Team World still looking for their first win in the event.

The tournament has been running since 2017, with Team Europe winning the two prior events.

Some have suggested the format has been unfair to Team World with Team Europe often having a team of players with better rankings.

That is even more evident this time around with five of Team Europe’s six players ranking inside the top 10 while Fabio Fognini ranks 11th.

John Isner is the highest ranked player for Team World at 20th while Jack Sock is 210th.

But Kyrgios, who has been a big advocate for the Laver Cup and the unique nature of the tournament, isn’t fazed in the slightest about that.

“I’m personally not scared of that team,” he said.

“I have beaten every single one of their members, and I know guys on my team have beaten them before, as well.

“I mean, yeah, on paper we’re undermanned and we’re an underdog, but I don’t believe that – you know, I strongly believe that we can win.

“Like we have been so close the last few years.

“We have had match points to win the whole thing.

“John had match points against Federer. I had match points against Federer. We got super unlucky.

“Yeah, okay, on ranking – I think ranking is the most overrated thing ever.

“I strongly believe we are going to win.”

Kyrgios will have to wait until the second day of the Laver Cup to get on the court as he isn’t involved in any of the matches on Friday.

Team Europe meanwhile have opted to save Rafael Nadal for the latter stages of the competition also.
