Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells Mason Greenwood how to break into Man Utd first team

Mason Greenwood will keep his place in the Manchester United first team if he continues to score goals, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Greenwood scored on his first start of the season in a 1-0 win over Astana on Thursday night, sparing United’s blushes.

Solskjaer has billed the 17-year-old as the best finisher at the club and did not purchase replacements for Romelu Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez in order to clear the way for Greenwood.

Greenwood has not yet featured in the Premier League this term but Solskjaer revealed to press how he can secure his berth.

“It’s always hard to keep players who perform well out of the team,” said the United boss.

“I remember when I came in here and if he keeps scoring goals, he’ll play.

“If he keeps scoring goals when he’s on the pitch, he’ll get more minutes in the Premier League as well and he’ll get his first start soon.

“He’s learning every single day in training. He’s training now with better players than he’s ever done.

“The more match time he has, the better he will become and the more used he will become to the tempo. I thought Astana was a good introduction for him.”

A knock-on effect of Greenwood’s emergence may see Marcus Rashford play on the wing even more frequently.

The England international has scored three goals in six appearances this season, two of which have been penalties.

“He’s getting the chances,” Solskjaer said. “Of course he could have had three against Astana and the keeper made a few fantastic saves.

“I don’t worry about that, no. We’re working every single day in training with Marcus.

“He wants to improve, he wants to be better. He could’ve finished with his left instead of his right for one chance. It was just one of those days.”
