OH yes you can! Panto fans will be able to heckle stars this year — by clicking fingers and stamping feet instead of shouting.

Covid-secure performances mean no booing or yelling “He’s behind you” when theatres reopen.

Government guidance says: “Discourage activities which can create aerosol (such as shouting, chanting and singing along).”

Ruth Eastwood, of the Blackpool Grand Theatre, said: “There are plenty of ways to be interactive.

“You can stamp your feet, you can click fingers, jump up and down.”

Emily Wood, from Evolution Productions, added: “We’ve spent months planning to get everyone involved.”

Bosses are finalising numbers with venues in Tiers 1 and 2 limited to 1,000 or 50 per cent capacity, whichever is lower.

Tom Beard, at LP Creatives, said: “It’s crazy but we’ve a few tricks ready, like saying ‘Don’t shout or you will get us arrested!’”

'A REAL SHAME'

By panto legend Christopher Biggins

THE idea of audiences clicking fingers instead of shouting out is really naff.

It doesn’t make much noise and it’s a real shame. A good pantomime depends on so many things and audience participation and reaction is key. It just won’t be the same.

There should be shouting because that’s pantomime. The idea of people sat there clicking their fingers makes me feel very sad. It feels empty.
