Peloton recalls all treadmills following death of child – 200,000 devices affected

3 mins read

Peloton issued the recall of treadmills due to reports of serious injuries and one death. Regulators previously urged customers to stop using the exercise equipment.

However, they have recently been hit with a number of safety complaints.

Last month, those with the devices were urged not to use them if they had children or pets nearby.

The warning was issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and a video was posted of a child being pulled under the treadmill.

The recall follows reports of the death of one child and a further 29 children sustaining injuries from being pulled under the treadmill.

The affected children sustained injuries such as cuts and broken bones.

The Safety Commission has now added Peloton received a total of 72 reports of adults, children, pets or other items being pulled under the treadmill.

The Tread+ treadmills were on sale for around $4,200, or £3,020.

Anyone who has bought one of the affected products is asked to return it.

They will be able to pick up a full refund from Peloton until November 6, 2022.

The recall will include around 125,000 Tread+ treadmills and around 1,050 Tread treadmills.

Peloton founder and CEO stated: “The decision to recall both products was the right thing to do for Peloton’s members and their families.

“I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+.

“We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologise.

“Today’s announcement reflects our recognition that, by working closely with the CPSC, we can increase safety awareness for our members.

“We believe strongly in the future of at-home connected fitness and are committed to work with the CPSC to set new industry safety standards for treadmills.

“We have a desire and a responsibility to be an industry leader in product safety.”
