Snow odds: Will it be a white Christmas in 2020?

4 mins read

WITH an icy weekend ahead, many in the UK are wondering how likely a white Christmas will be.

The bookies think it could be a holiday miracle, slashing their odds 10/1 to 6/1 – and the Met Office isn’t ruling it out either:

Will it snow at Christmas in 2020?

There’s over 50% chance of snowfall this year – though the Met Office can only give an accurate forecast of snowfall on Christmas up to five days beforehand.

They say: “A snowflake has fallen somewhere in the UK on Christmas Day 38 times in the last 54 years, so we can probably expect more than half of all Christmas Days to be a ‘white Christmas’.

“However, there has only been a widespread covering of snow on the ground (where more than 40% of stations in the UK reported snow on the ground at 9 am) four times in the last 51 years.”

Bookmakers are never ones to shy away from white Christmas, with Paddy Power having odds of 5/1 that it will snow at London Heathrow Airport.

That is the same for Manchester, Leeds, Belfast and Birmingham, while Cardiff, Norwich and Bristol Airports are at 6/1.

But you have more chance of snow in Scotland, with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee having a 3/1 chance of snow on Christmas Day.

Odds correct as of December 4, 2020

When was the last White Christmas in the UK?

Technically, 2017 was the last white Christmas in the UK, but no snow settled on the ground. This also happened in 2016 and 2015.

The last “proper” white Christmas was in 2010, when the highest ever recorded amount of weather stations reported snow settling – 83%!

Another 19% of weather stations reported sleet, so it truly was a miracle for almost all of the nation.

What are the White Christmas lyrics?

Bing Crosby’s holiday classic from 1942 describes the scene many are wishing for:

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
“Just like the ones I used to know
“Where the treetops glisten
“And children listen
“To hear sleigh bells in the snow

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
“With every Christmas card I write
“May your days be merry and bright
“And may all your Christmases be white

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
“Just like the ones I used to know
“Where the treetops glisten
“And children listen
“To hear sleigh bells in the snow

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
“With every Christmas card I write
“May your days be merry and bright
“And may all your Christmases be white”
